Monday

A very dark and wet day. It was also slightly cooler with it being 12ºC at 9am.

Not wanting to get soaked, just decided to do the usual quick check of the Wardens Office for Moths.

With the rain starting late last night, I was pleasantly surprised at how many moths there were this morning. But unfortunately nothing new. I couldn’t resist taking a few different angles of this Canary-Shouldered Thorn. Its so much easier when they are at eye level like this one was…

Yet another Silver Y but I quite like the marking’s on this one…

I found a second Flounced Rustic. This one a bit lighter coloured than the 1st one I found….

This was nice to see, although it was not my best of photos. I’ve photographed  Mother of Pearl moths a few times over the years. But never seen one with the iridescent lustre, which gives this moth its name….

Sunday

Very grey start to the day. Early morning the temperature was 13ºC.

Just a very short visit this morning. But I was so pleased I did check The Wardens Office lights out. I have finally got to see another Noctuidae (Plusiinae) Its one of the moths I’ve been photographing the Silver Y’s for, just in case my photos turned up one of the Y’s Allies. Well this morning my patience was rewarded with a Gold Spot. This moth is one of the more obvious ones, and I knew right away that I had a new moth to photograph. Other Y allies are not so obvious, and need a closer examination of photos…..

Saturday

Quite a dry sunny morning. Decided to walk the lanes round HC today with Ken. But first we checked out the Wardens Office wall.

This was a sad end to a beautiful moth. But at least this Black Arches will provide a nice meal for this unidentified spider…

IMG_9388

The above moth (Deceased) was the only moth on the Wardens Office. But we had a bit of luck, when a Straw Dot landed on the heavily dewed Staffordshire Wildlife Trusts truck. Felt a bit sorry for it, because it looked like it got stuck…

Need to ID this moth at the Wardens Office…

IMG_8893

Amazed lately how many Speckled Bush Crickets like the Wardens Office wall. There were 6 today…

IMG_8912 IMG_8966

Also on the Wardens wall was a Yellow Shell, and a second generation Green Carpet….

IMG_9031 IMG_9046

Out on the main Common, there was this warming up female Southern Hawker. They hardly move early morning…

Tuesday

Felt a bit cooler this morning, and the wind made it feel even colder. But the temperature was 13ºC.

This was a smaller Canary-shouldered Thorn at the Wardens Office this time…

IMG_8217 IMG_8306

Its getting that time of year, where the moths numbers seem to be dropping off. This Silver Y already looks well past its best….

IMG_8344

The only other thing to photograph at the Wardens Office was a Bumblebee. Note the empty Pollen Basket on the leg…

IMG_8360Yet again another moth with fantastic camouflage. This time an Old Lady. I wonder if these need help crossing the road?

Nice to see a Finch flock building up, down Mere Lane. This one mainly Linnets and Greenfinch’s…

IMG_3937

Loved watching this Hornet take the legs and wings off this Flesh Fly. Leaving just the protein of the body, probably to take back to the Barn Owl Box….

Sunday

Quite a nice morning, with it being about 17ºC early morning.

This must have been the lowest amount of moths at the Wardens Office, since I’ve been checking.

Dingy Footman…

IMG_7617

The only other moth of note, was this Small Phoenix…

IMG_7659 IMG_7708

With hardly any moths, decided to check Mere Farm Pools. Down Mere Lane, there were a family of Pheasants all enjoying the early morning sun. I would guess they were trying to dry off, from yesterday’s heavy rain. There was young and an adult female, all on different levels of the farmers gate. I now regret not taking the whole gate, with all of them on it…

There is still a male Common Redstart on the Main Common. I only got distant record photos. Two of them with a Willow Warbler…

Both me and Ken, thought we saw 3 White-letter Hairstreaks today. But all were fast flying and high up. So we are hoping for good weather tomorrow morning!

Saturday

Didn’t have much time at HC this morning. I just checked the Wardens Office lights. But this was a nice highlight, a new moth for me. This one is a Yellow-barred Brindle. Which for a green moth, seems a strange name. But like the Green Carpet it fades to a lighter colour. In this case yellow….

IMG_7227

This next moth was really lucky I didn’t step on it. I had already walked passed it once without seeing it. I even walked passed it a second time, but it did catch my eye. I think if the leaf litter had been a bit heavier, this Drinker would have been perfectly camouflaged….

IMG_7474IMG_7410

There were two Canary-shouldered Thorns. One really well worn, this one also had a Lacewing for company…

IMG_7294IMG_7158

There were quite a few Lesser Swallow Prominent….

IMG_7264

Yet another Speckled-bush Cricket on a wall, and not a Bush…
