Sunny and Frosty -2ºC

With the sun shining this morning, and a slight frost, I asked Ken if he fancied another trip to see the Hoopoe at Wall Heath. He did, and at about 8am this morning we arrived to see the Hoopoe fast asleep. We got as close as we dared not to disturb the bird. It seemed to be cosy as the sun started to rise above the hill behind us. I saw quite a few Hoopoe’s in Majorca (almost walking under your feet) in the Spanish sun, It seemed so unatural to see one perched on a stone, on the frosty ground of Staffordshire England. Every so often it would raise its head as noisy Crows flew over. Happily we left the bird to enjoy the sun as it warmed up, and also going back to sleep…

After a great session with the Hoopoe, we headed of to HC. We checked the Wardens office out for moths without any luck. But we did spot a Harlequin Ladybird….

A female Mallard was on the Island Pool. The pool was mainly frozen over, with only a small area for the Mallard to swim in. (Thanks Ken for the Frozen Pool photos)…

Sunday…

Dull and Cold.

Visited a couple of places local to Highgate Common today.

The first being Hinksford, Wall Heath, to see the Hoopoe. I had seen it a few times, but each time it  was raining, so I decided against taking the camera gear. Today was dry, although dull. Besides that the bird has become really wary of people now, and kept a good distance between us and itself. It also flies up to nearby trees now, if you get to close. But I did manage this distant record photo (below). I do regret now not making time on a sunnier day early on, when the bird was less wary. But its not like this was my first Hoopoe, so just to see it in Staffordshire was a good tick for me…

After Wall Heath me and Ken travelled to the farm, where we had good views of a male Reed Bunting….

Also got photos of Blue Tit/Mallard and a couple  Cormarants flew over…

Then it was off over to HC, where there still is a lack of moths. Unfortunately by now I was getting really cold, and my sunday roast was calling to me. But I couldn’t resist a few photos of a cute Long-tailed Tit, and what appeared to be an injured Dunnock…..

I’m Back!

With all the bad weather, and both my Wife’s parents being unwell, along with my own Mum. Plus the fact I have had bad back problems. I have only been down HC a handful of times the past few months.

But hopefully, I can start getting back to what I love doing..Photographing the Wildlife on Highgate Common.

For today, I’m just going to post some of the photos I’ve taken on my very few, and short trips over The Common…..

The moths have only just started to turn up at the lights. But I did have a bit of luck the one day I visited. I was talking to Cobbs the Staffordshire Wildlife Warden, and noticed this Spring Usher land on the front of a Suzuki car parked outside the window. I only had my phone on me, so I snapped a photo with that…Image

The only other moths were seen this week. They were 2 Dotted Borders, one of which was hiding on the CCTV Security sign.

Also at the Wardens Office was this nicely marked Shoulder Stripe….

Birds where mostly the commoner species, and I won’t insult people by naming them. The Feeding Station is now getting quite a few visitors, which is always nice to see…

Birds out and about the Common including this Yellowhammer adding a splash of colour on a very grey day. I also enjoyed The Little Bit of Bread and No Cheese song it repeated for at least 5 minutes…

Strange one this, believe it or not this is my first record of Mute Swans at HC, albeit a flyover, on yet another grey day….IMG_8654

With all the rain this winter, its nice to see even the small Pool full with water…

Also nice to see the new Bat Boxes round The Common now…

Dull and Grey day, but the last few days have been better…Thank The Lord!!!!…

Going by the position of the hole in this Hazelnut, and the teeth marks I would guess a Vole had eaten its contents. (See illustration below)…

The only invertabrate I spotted on my walk was a 7 Spot Ladybird possibly over wintering in amongst the heather…
