1.5.16.

Sunday..Partial Sun early morning. But mainly overcast with rain from noon. 11ºC.

Today’s post is a bit unusual, and also with a bit of excitement for Highgate Common. Last night David Powner told me that a male Pied Flycatcher had been reported at The Common (Thanks David). It was also reported on the Staffordshire Bird News. But not knowing exactly where the bird was (needle in a haystack), and rain forecast for most of the morning, me and Ken decided on another trip to Belvide Reservoir (Photos to Follow). When I got home from our trip. The Pied Flycatcher had been reported again today on Birdguides. It also appeared to be in the same area as the Wood Warbler. So at 3:30pm I decided to go and see if I could find the bird. With the very dull conditions and rain, after about 30 minutes I was just about to give up and go home.  Then luckily it called, and this ended a fantastic day for me….

Out of order I know, but thats the afternoons excitement for HC covered, before the Belvide Reservoir trip. Well it is a Blog about Highgate Common.

Belvide Reservoir Trip….

Me and Ken decided on an early start and we arrived at Belvide at 6:30am. Even at that time of the morning the Hirundines and Swifts were in large numbers. With such big numbers I decided to try to get as many photos of the four species that were present. I must admit, what happened later on in the morning was a complete surprise…

Now the surprise..I must admit, I had already got some House Martin flight photos. But when you get one resting up so near, I binned those. Having such great views I also learnt something new about the House Martin. I never realised they have a white lower eyelid. Similar to how a Dipper looks when they close their eyelids. Being so close to a bird that has travelled all the way from Africa, is such a magical experience….

Unlike last visit to Belvide, we did get a Sedge Warbler show well. I think on the second photo this Ringed Sedge Warbler could hear or see another Sedge Warbler singing. It kept its head stretched looking for it, for ages….

A male and female Mallard did not want to move off the path. So I decided to do a couple of head photos, while they eventually waddled off…
